LANCASTER, PA — Following a meticulous investigation, the Lancaster City Bureau of Police announced yesterday that the death of Michael James Owens, an inmate at Lancaster County Prison, was due to natural causes. The announcement comes after Owens was found unresponsive in his cell during a routine check on January 4, 2024.

According to the police statement, prison staff discovered Owens around 10:00 AM and swiftly called 911. While awaiting emergency responders, staff attempted to revive Owens by performing CPR and using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), but their efforts were unsuccessful. Despite continued resuscitation attempts by first responders upon their arrival, Owens remained unresponsive and was declared deceased shortly thereafter.

The death of an inmate always triggers questions and concerns about the conditions within our correctional facilities. However, the police bureau’s announcement following its thorough investigation should provide some reassurance to those concerned about the circumstances surrounding Owens’ death.
