LANCASTER COUNTY, PA — As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, authorities in Lancaster County are ramping up impaired driving enforcement efforts. Multiple jurisdictions throughout the county will be deploying roving DUI patrols to ensure the safety of all road users.
In 2022, during the Thanksgiving period from November 23 to November 27, Lancaster County recorded eight crashes involving at least one impaired driver. Tragically, two of these incidents resulted in fatalities. These sobering statistics have spurred law enforcement agencies into action, leading to the increased presence of roving patrols.
Roving patrols are mobile officers on the roads who specifically target signs of impaired driving. They will be active throughout the Thanksgiving holiday and the following weekend, ensuring that those who choose to drink do not get behind the wheel.
Statewide, there were 48 total alcohol-related crashes and 539 DUI arrests during the same period last year. This year, local authorities are hoping that increased enforcement will help to reduce these numbers.
As part of the enforcement plan, Drug Recognition Experts (DREs) will also be available. These police investigators are highly trained to detect drivers impaired by drugs, further contributing to the overall safety of the roads.
While these measures are in place to deter impaired driving, law enforcement agencies continue to encourage the use of alternatives for those who choose to drink. Designated drivers, ride-share programs such as Uber and Lyft, and traditional taxi services are all safe and reliable options.
The overarching message from authorities is clear: If you’re drinking, don’t drive. Let’s all work together to ensure a safe and happy Thanksgiving for everyone in Lancaster County.
