LANCASTER, PA — The Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office announced it is currently investigating an incident involving the shooting of an armed man by local law enforcement. The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning and resulted in the man being hospitalized in stable condition.
At approximately 4:40 a.m., Lancaster City Police were dispatched to the 100 block of Hershey Avenue in Lancaster following reports of a domestic incident and shots fired. The caller also reported that the man had exited the residence with what was referred to as an “AR.”
Preliminary information indicates that upon arrival, officers encountered the man outside his home, armed with a semiautomatic rifle. According to the reports, the man fired the rifle at the officers and pointed it at them despite multiple commands to drop the weapon.
Body-worn camera footage from one of the responding officers captures the man moving to the front yard of his residence and raising the weapon to a shooting position, ignoring further commands to drop the firearm. At this point, three officers fired their weapons at the man.
The investigation into this incident is in its preliminary stages, and more information will be released when appropriate. District Attorney Heather Adams will review the incident and make a determination at a later date regarding the use of force by the police officers involved.
The Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office is urging anyone with information related to this case to contact them at 717-299-8100 and ask to speak with a detective.
