MIAMI, FL, and PHILADELPHIA, PA — Lafayette Square, in collaboration with Shift Capital and Voyage Investments, has committed to a substantial investment aimed at transforming a vacant warehouse into a new facility for El Centro de Estudiantes Big Picture Philadelphia School. This initiative is set to enhance educational opportunities and contribute to community revitalization in Philadelphia.
El Centro, part of Big Picture Philadelphia, focuses on providing real-world learning experiences for students aged 16-21 who have disengaged from traditional schooling. The school offers an accelerated diploma program, integrating career exploration and internships within a supportive, resilience-focused environment.
“This commitment represents an investment in the future of El Centro, and by extension an investment in the future of Philadelphia,” stated Damien Dwin, founder and CEO of Lafayette Square. “At Lafayette Square, education plays a crucial role in driving community impact, yet too often alternative learning programs are overlooked and underserved.”
Brian Murray, CEO of Shift Capital, emphasized the significance of the project, saying, “We’re proud to partner with Lafayette Square and Voyage Investments on this important project that aligns with our vision of sustainable development and community revitalization. By reinvesting in underutilized spaces like this warehouse, we’re not just creating a school, but a foundation for future success.”
El Centro’s Principal, Dr. Maria Gonzalez, expressed gratitude for the support, highlighting the positive impact on the students. “This investment will allow us to expand our efforts to engage Opportunity Youth, providing them with the education, resources, and environment they need to thrive,” she noted.
The renovation project, located at 3360 Frankford Avenue, completed its first phase in June 2024. Lafayette Square’s investment will support the second phase, scheduled to begin in Summer 2025. The development is expected to generate 50 construction jobs and 20 permanent positions while enhancing job readiness and workforce training programs for 200 students each year.
