PHILADELPHIA, PA — The East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District (EPABID) has ushered in a new era with the appointment of Katie Hanford as its Executive Director. Known for her expertise in city planning and nonprofit management, Hanford will lead one of Philadelphia’s most vibrant commercial corridors, famous for its diverse culinary scene and dynamic community.
EPABID Board President Michelle Gillen-Doobrajh expressed her enthusiasm for Hanford’s appointment, stating, “We are excited for a new chapter here at the EPABID with Katie Hanford. Her background in city planning, nonprofit work, and passion for small business development is a perfect fit for the Avenue.”
Hanford, a native of West Chester, PA, brings a robust educational background with a degree in Anthropology and Urban Design and Planning from the University of Washington and a Masters in City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania. Residing in South Philly for the past five years, she has developed a deep connection to the East Passyunk neighborhood. Her vision for the district focuses on bolstering small businesses through strategic events, grants, and partnerships.
Reflecting on her new role, Hanford remarked, “A city thrives when small, independent businesses have the resources to act on their creativity and connect to their neighborhood. The businesses along East Passyunk have already created an amazing community. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to support their success and grow the Avenue’s impact on the city.”
Hanford has already begun engaging with the local business community, diving into initiatives like Passyunk Passegiatta and planning an exciting lineup of fall events. Residents and visitors can look forward to East Passyunk First Fridays, the Witch Craft Crawl, and the Fall Fest. These events aim to foster community spirit and highlight the unique offerings of the Avenue’s merchants.
Her commitment to community building aligns with her passion for dynamic and varied work, as she stated, “I also wanted a dynamic job where I don’t do the same thing every day, and that is certainly the case for this role.”
As Hanford takes the helm, her leadership is anticipated to further enhance East Passyunk Avenue’s reputation as a key cultural and economic hub in Philadelphia, supporting its vibrant tapestry of local businesses and community activities.
