KING OF PRUSSIA, PA — The Harper family is preparing to welcome a new member. Fans recently learned that Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper and his wife Kayla are expecting their fourth child. Married since December 2016, the couple currently shares a son and two daughters. In a touching display, the Harpers chose to share their gender reveal in a way that invited fans to be part of their growing family’s joy.
In a heartfelt and imaginative gesture, Harper revealed the gender of his upcoming child in front of a home crowd during a recent game against the San Francisco Giants. Moments before his first-inning at-bat, Harper—who, like the fans, had yet to learn the baby’s gender—turned to Phillies shortstop Trea Turner to help orchestrate the surprise.
Turner was tasked with handing him either a pink or blue bat—each custom-crafted by Victus Sports, the highly renowned bat manufacturer located in King of Prussia. When Turner passed him a blue bat, the message was clear: the Harpers are expecting a baby boy!
“Pretty cool, pretty special day,” Turner said, via MLB.com. “I was confused at first, but I think he wanted to share that moment with us. I think it was pretty cool. He’s a pretty creative guy. He let us know in our team meeting. He kind of wanted to share the moment with everybody. He was nice enough to ask me to do it. I thought it was a nice moment for him and his family. I think they were all watching here from up top.”
Turner added a touch of humor to the moment, recalling how he briefly teased Harper before the reveal. “I messed with him a little bit in the dugout. I picked up the pink one, swung it around a little bit,” Turner said. “He thought he was having a girl.”
Turner and Harper were previously teammates with the Washington Nationals from 2015 to 2018. Harper signed with the Phillies in February 2019, and Turner later joined him in Philadelphia in December 2022.
This past Monday, April 21st, the Harpers shared the story behind the special moment in a post on Instagram “We wanted to be surprised and find out together, so we recruited Trea for some help. The doctor texted him the news and he was given two bats—one pink, one blue. Right before Bryce’s first at-bat, Trea gave him the bat that matched the baby’s gender. We’re so excited to add another boy to the family to even us out.”
The social media post also included a video of the reveal itself, capturing the moment Kayla leapt with joy upon learning they were expecting a boy.
Victus Sports joined in the celebration, commenting, “Amazing to be a part of. Congrats!”
Although Harper struck out after receiving the blue bat and the Phillies suffered a tough 10–4 loss, those details felt secondary in light of the moment that had just unfolded. Despite the outcome on the scoreboard, it was a game—and a day—that Harper, his family, and Phillie fans everywhere will always remember.
