InterDigital Ignites Next-Gen Visual Experiences at NAB 2024 with Advanced HDR and Sustainable Streaming Solutions

InterDigital

WILMINGTON, DE — Video streaming is evolving, and InterDigital, Inc., a technology research and development company, is at the cutting edge of this revolution. Set to be showcased at the forthcoming NAB 2024, taking place in Las Vegas from April 13 – 17, are InterDigital’s breakthrough solutions in both high dynamic range (HDR) and sustainable video streaming, developed with sustainability and viewer experience at their heart.

At center stage is the Advanced HDR by Technicolor®, a collaboration between Philips, InterDigital, and Technicolor. This innovative suite of HDR solutions leverages machine learning to enhance image quality dramatically and boost the consumer viewing experience.

In practical terms, the Advanced HDR by Technicolor® allows for the efficient distribution of HDR content suitable for any video streaming service provider or live broadcast production workflow. It ensures excellent source fidelity on both Standard Dynamic Range (SDR)-to-HDR and HDR-to-SDR conversions, while maintaining the one-master workflow for both HDR and SDR productions.

What sets the Advanced HDR by Technicolor® apart is its unique capability of delivering High Dynamic Range broadcasts of any content, anytime, anywhere over the ATSC 3.0 NextGen TV stations. Further insights into Advanced HDR streaming solutions will be shared at NAB 2024, with InterDigital’s contributions visible at the ATSC booth in West Hall.

Concurrent with the Advanced HDR, InterDigital will spotlight its work on Sustainable Streaming Solutions at NAB 2024. Here, current technologies and forward-looking strategies supporting the sustainable delivery of Ultra HD content will take center stage. InterDigital, a member of the Ultra HD Forum, will showcase three demonstrations on energy-efficient streaming:

  1. “Pixel Value Reduction in HDR Content,” demonstrating how InterDigital’s AI expertise adjusts pixel luminance to cut energy consumption while preserving visual quality.
  2. “Energy Efficient Enhanced Media Streaming,” displaying the impact of luminance adjustment on energy usage and the strategic insertion of video metadata to enrich content delivery and viewer experience, in partnership with ATEME.
  3. “Viewing Condition Impacts on Display Energy Consumption,” illustrating how ambient lighting affects modern TV energy usage, presented with collaborator CTOIC.

Pivotal to the Advanced HDR by Technicolor® are two primary components. The Intelligent Tone Management (ITM) tool dynamically converts SDR content to HDR with full freedom to manage contrast, brightness, and color saturation. The Single Layer HDR (SL-HDR) is a dynamic and tunable tool that implements the ETSI SL-HDR standards to deliver a single, high-quality broadcast stream from any mix of input content across various HDR formats.

Thanks to the unique backward compatibility feature of SL-HDR1, consumers who lack HDR devices can still enjoy the best quality SDR experience. This underlines InterDigital’s commitment to ensuring that all consumers can enjoy their content, irrespective of device capabilities.

Unquestionably, InterDigital’s display of technological finesse at NAB 2024 promises to bring into the public eye the future of video streaming. As we move deeper into the digital age, the implications of these developments extend beyond just technological advancements. They represent a new era of accessibility, sustainability, and superior viewer experience in the field of video streaming, setting a new standard for what’s to come.
