InterDigital and Broadpeak Collaborate to Stream Volumetric Video at Scale

InterDigital

WILMINGTON, DE — InterDigital, Inc. and Broadpeak have announced a collaboration aimed at developing content delivery networks capable of streaming MPEG Visual Volumetric Video-based Coding (V3C) immersive content at scale. This partnership comes as volumetric video, a critical component in creating increasingly immersive experiences, requires substantial bandwidth and efficient distribution networks for wide-scale dissemination.

Volumetric video, unlike traditional video, consists of a sequence of frames where each frame is a 3D representation of a real-world object or scene captured at a specific moment in time. The efficient coding and streaming of such content are defined by the MPEG V3C standard, which also includes important compression codecs for attaining sustainable data rates.

This collaboration will tap into the research expertise of both companies. InterDigital will provide the V3C end-to-end implementation platform developed with its partner Philips, while Broadpeak will contribute its knowledge on packaging and content delivery network (CDN) technologies. Together, they aim to demonstrate and benchmark the efficient delivery of immersive media, including through industry trade shows.

Rajesh Pankaj, EVP, and Chief Technology Officer, InterDigital, emphasized the significance of this collaboration. “As we innovate and push the boundaries of distributing immersive content and experiences, it is our collaboration and joint research with partners like Broadpeak that further amplify our research impact,” he said.

Guillaume Bichot, Head of Exploration at Broadpeak, noted the potential challenges of delivering bandwidth-intensive formats like volumetric content streaming at scale. He stated, “Thanks to our collaboration with InterDigital, we will further enhance our Origin-Packager and CDN to stream standardized V3C volumetric content to wide audiences.”

The partnership will showcase the results of their collaborative effort at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from February 26 – 29. The display will demonstrate the innovative ability to stream volumetric video content to wide audiences on commercially available, off-the-shelf devices.

Ultimately, the collaboration between InterDigital and Broadpeak aims to address the challenges of streaming volumetric video content at scale, a critical component for creating increasingly immersive experiences. By merging their respective areas of expertise, these companies are taking a significant step towards enhancing the delivery and enjoyment of immersive content, a development that could have far-reaching implications for the telecommunications sector.
