InductEV’s Wireless Charging Technology Named TIME Best Invention 2024

InductEV

KING OF PRUSSIA, PAInductEV has been honored with a spot on TIME’s Best Inventions list for 2024, recognized in the Sustainability category for its innovative wireless charging network. The award celebrates groundbreaking technologies that redefine how we live and work, chosen by a panel of TIME editors for their originality, effectiveness, ambition, and impact.

InductEV’s cutting-edge technology addresses major sustainability challenges, particularly in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the commercial transport sector. Transportation accounts for over 2 billion tons of CO2 emissions annually, making solutions like InductEV’s vital for environmental progress.

John F. Rizzo, President and CEO of InductEV, acknowledged the team’s hard work, stating, “InductEV’s engineers and our colleagues who support them deserve the lion’s share of praise for this prestigious recognition and the tireless work that led to it. The commercial transport industry is at a tipping point in its electrification and decarbonization efforts. As a result, we are seeing tremendous interest in and adoption of our solution.”

InductEV’s high-power wireless charging system utilizes inductive charging pads that activate upon connecting with under-vehicle pads. This system allows for various power levels, ranging from 75 kW to 450 kW, shifting reliance from lengthy overnight wired charging to more efficient, throughout-the-day charging sessions. This method optimizes the use of available clean energy, benefiting both power utilities and fleet operators.

In 2024, InductEV expanded its patent portfolio with three new U.S. patents, totaling 105 worldwide, with 118 more pending. The company’s technology is currently being deployed in several high-profile projects, including:

  • An agreement with Seattle’s Sound Transit to implement wireless charging for double-decker electric buses on busy routes, with projections that half of Washington’s electric buses will use InductEV’s chargers by 2026.
  • Deployment of wireless charging for electric port tractors at the AP Moeller Maersk Terminal in Port Elizabeth, NJ.
  • Operational municipal transit buses in locations such as Indianapolis, Martha’s Vineyard, and Oregon.
  • An OEM integration with Phoenix Motor Inc. and other vehicle manufacturers like MAFI, OrangeEV, BYD, Gillig, and Volvo.
  • A partnership with Volvo for a wireless-charging taxi fleet in Gothenburg, Sweden, and further installations in Oslo.
