I-76 Bridge Repairs: Major Weekend Traffic Disruptions Ahead!

Traffic Advisory

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Commuters in Philadelphia are advised to prepare for significant traffic disruptions as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) initiates critical bridge deck repairs on the eastbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway). Scheduled to commence over four consecutive weekends beginning September 21, these closures aim to address deteriorating concrete sections and enhance the structural integrity of the thoroughfare.

The targeted repairs will focus on two key structures: the segment of I-76 East spanning the Schuylkill River and CSX rail tracks, and the adjacent span over Grays Ferry Avenue, Wharton Street, and Reed Street. PennDOT contractors will undertake a comprehensive process involving the removal of existing latex modified concrete, the identification and repair of compromised deck sections, and the application of a dense graded bituminous material. This material is designed to mitigate surface cracking and ensure waterproofing, thereby extending the longevity of the bridge decks.

The initial closure will be in effect from 9:00 PM on Saturday, September 21, through 4:00 AM on Monday, September 23. During this period, eastbound I-76 will be inaccessible from just after the Grays Ferry Avenue/University Avenue (Exit 346B) ramp to just before the 34th Street on-ramp. Subsequent closures are scheduled for the weekends of September 27-30, October 4-7, and October 11-13, with weather conditions influencing the exact timeline.

Motorists will be redirected via regional detour routes utilizing I-676 East (Vine Street Expressway) to I-95 South or I-476 South to I-95 North. For local traffic, the advised exit is Grays Ferry Avenue/University Avenue (Exit 346B), with directions to the University Avenue Bridge/34th Street as an alternative access point to I-76 East.

Electronic message boards across I-76 and related traffic conduits will inform drivers of the closures and suggest alternate routes. These efforts are strategically coordinated with the City of Philadelphia, the Sports Complex, SEPTA, and other regional stakeholders to minimize disruption.

Commuters are strongly encouraged to consider alternative routes or modes of transportation during the closure periods, as significant congestion is anticipated on both I-76 East and the surrounding surface streets.
