WEST CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the continuation of extensive construction work on Interstate 476 and I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in the coming week. This undertaking is part of a substantial $63.7 million effort aimed at resurfacing, repairing, and enhancing nearly 17 miles of I-476, including associated ramps and bridges stretching from I-76 in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County, to I-95 in Ridley Township, Delaware County.

From Sunday, October 6, through Friday, October 11, motorists should anticipate lane closures on sections of both northbound and southbound I-476 between the I-76 and I-95 interchanges. The closures are scheduled to occur nightly from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM to accommodate paving, bridge repairs, guiderail installation, and tree trimming activities. Additionally, a lane closure will be enforced on both eastbound and westbound I-76 between Matsonford Road and I-476 during the same hours for bridge repair operations.

Drivers are urged to plan for additional travel time when passing through these construction zones, as the activities are expected to cause significant traffic delays and backups. It is essential to note that all scheduled work is contingent upon favorable weather conditions.

The scope of this project involves milling and overlaying the travel lanes and shoulders of I-476 in both directions, alongside extensive repairs on 49 bridges. Furthermore, 21 stormwater management basins will be enhanced to tackle existing rock slope stabilization challenges. Additional improvements include repairing sound walls, replacing drainage inlets at selected locations, and the installation of new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderails.

The primary objective of this extensive construction initiative is to extend the design life of the interstate, improve ride quality and safety, and ameliorate the condition of various roadside elements currently deemed substandard. These elements encompass stormwater basins, drainage inlets, slope stabilization measures, guiderails, and signage.

H&K Group, Inc., based in Skippack, PA, serves as the general contractor for this project, which is fully funded by federal resources. The anticipated completion of physical construction is slated for late 2025.
