STRASBURG, PA — North America’s hydroelectric industry is grappling with an acute workforce challenge, according to the latest “Ear to the River” survey. This annual survey, now in its third year, is a collaborative effort between the National Hydropower Association (NHA), the Ontario Waterpower Association (OWA), the Hydropower Foundation, and Kleinschmidt Associates.
Launched in 2021, the “Ear to the River” survey seeks to provide hydroelectric facility owners and professionals within the broader renewable energy sector with insights into the key issues confronting the industry. The objective is to better equip stakeholders to navigate the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
The survey data serves as a critical tool for lobbying efforts, offering evidence-based insights on how different policies could influence the hydro sector’s role in transitioning to a clean energy future.
Marla Barnes, Vice President of Member and Industry Engagement at the NHA, underscored the importance of the survey, stating, “The Ear to the River survey is a lifeline for understanding the pulse of the North American hydroelectric industry. It equips us with valuable insights into the primary challenges and opportunities we face, informing stakeholders and aiding in the advocacy for policies that support a clean energy future.”
Echoing Barnes’ sentiments, Janelle Bates, Director of Communications and Member Relations at the OWA, lauded the survey’s role in shaping the association’s advocacy efforts.
However, the survey also highlighted a pressing issue: the industry’s struggle to attract and retain a skilled workforce. Tim Oakes, Business Sector Leader, Power and Energy, with Kleinschmidt, expressed concern over this trend. He said, “The 2023 survey results show that workforce remains the most pressing challenge for the industry and that we’re not doing enough to promote hydropower as an excellent career choice.”
As preparations gear up for the 2024 edition of the survey, the team is keen on hearing from industry peers to enhance participation and engagement in future surveys. The “Ear to the River” survey team remains dedicated to collaborating with industry partners to ensure the survey continues to be a valuable resource for the hydroelectric community.
