Hunting Park Bridge Reopens with Enhanced Features in $7.79 Million Upgrade

PennDOT

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Thursday afternoon brought a significant change to the landscape of Hunting Park in Philadelphia, as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) opened the newly replaced bridge that carries the southbound U.S. 13/Hunting Park Avenue ramp over U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard).

This reopening, however, isn’t the end of the road for this $7.79 million project. PennDOT warns drivers to anticipate occasional daytime and nighttime lane closures. These will be in place as needed to complete post-construction punch list operations, which are essentially final checks and tweaks to ensure the highest quality work.

The previous single-span, steel plate girder bridge has been replaced by a new structure built by South State, Inc., a Bridgeton, N.J.-based general contractor. The new single-span, prestressed concrete bridge provides increased vertical clearance, an improvement that enhances the safety and flow of traffic.

In addition to the bridge replacement, several other enhancements were part of this federally funded project. Retaining wall extensions were constructed on the approaches of the new bridge to provide additional support and stability. Full-depth paving was completed, promising a smoother ride for motorists.

Pedestrians haven’t been overlooked either. New sidewalks were installed along with ADA-compliant curb ramps, making the area more accessible. A new traffic signal, highway lighting, guiderails, and pavement markings also contribute to the overall safety and usability of the area.

While the project is nearing completion, Pennsylvanians should expect minor disruptions.
