BENSALEM TWP, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a major construction initiative set to commence on Rockhill Drive and U.S. 1, as part of a comprehensive $116 million project aimed at reconstructing, widening, and enhancing a three-mile stretch of U.S. 1 in Bucks County. This ambitious undertaking reflects PennDOT’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure and traffic flow in the region.
The construction will bring about several travel restrictions that motorists should be aware of. Starting Monday, November 18, through Friday, November 22, Rockhill Drive will operate under a single-lane traffic pattern in both directions between Old Lincoln Highway and Neshaminy Boulevard from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM for essential bridge painting activities.
A full closure of Rockhill Drive is scheduled from 7:00 PM on Friday, November 22, until 7:00 AM on Monday, November 25, to facilitate intersection reconstruction. During this period, drivers will need to follow designated detours to navigate around the closed section. Specifically, those heading from Rockhill Drive to U.S. 1 North should travel north on Neshaminy Boulevard, then west on Bristol Road, south on Old Lincoln Highway, east on Street Road, and finally to the ramp for U.S. 1 North.
Additionally, on Monday, November 25, and Tuesday, November 26, a single-lane pattern with 15-minute traffic stoppages will be implemented on U.S. 1 between Rockhill Drive and Route 413 (Bellevue Avenue) from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning. This measure is necessary for a planned traffic shift, ensuring the continuation of construction work without major disruptions during peak hours.
Detours are also in place for motorists traveling from U.S. 1 North to Rockhill Drive and from U.S. 1 South to Neshaminy Mall, with specific routes outlined to guide drivers through the temporary changes. The detour plans are designed to maintain traffic flow while minimizing inconvenience.
This construction is a crucial component of PennDOT’s U.S. 1/RC2 contract, which is focused on improving road capacity and safety by widening U.S. 1 from south of the Rockhill Drive Interchange to north of the Penndel/Business U.S. 1 Interchange. Motorists are advised to allocate extra travel time due to potential delays caused by the roadwork and detours.
