Historic Tinicum Township Bridge Reopens, Safeguarding a Key Route in Bucks County

PennDOT

TINICUM TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the reopening of the bridge that carries Route 32 (River Road) over the Delaware Canal in Tinicum Township, Bucks County. The bridge, which is crucial for local traffic, was shut down following damage from a vehicular accident on December 13, 2023.

PennDOT’s contractor embarked on extensive repairs to restore the 92-year-old structure. The work involved rebuilding the masonry wingwall – a vertical wall at the abutment of a bridge that holds the soil behind it. Further, a new concrete moment slab and barrier were constructed. A moment slab is a type of structure designed to handle bending or ‘moment’ forces, offering additional protection to the bridge.

As part of the restoration project, new guiderails, pavement markings, and signage were added. Guiderails act as barriers along the roadside to deter vehicles from straying off the road.

The bridge, with its steel, stone-masonry construction, spans 46 feet in length and 20 feet in width. It plays a significant role in facilitating local transportation, carrying approximately 2,608 vehicles per day.
