BUCKS COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the upcoming replacement of the pedestrian bridge on Centre Avenue over Newtown Creek, located in Newtown Township and Newtown Borough, Bucks County. The project, which highlights both the need for modern infrastructure and the preservation of historical value, will result in temporary road closures and detours for motorists.
Beginning Monday, December 30, and continuing through Friday, January 17, Centre Avenue will be closed around the clock to all traffic between Sycamore Street and State Street. Detours will guide motorists along Sycamore Street, Washington Avenue, and State Street during this period. Local access will remain available for residents and businesses; however, commuters and visitors should expect delays and allow for extra travel time in the area.
This temporary closure marks a significant point in addressing the structural needs of the historic bridge, which was originally constructed in 1796. The Centre Avenue bridge has been a critical transportation link, carrying approximately 4,254 vehicles daily. While it has served the community for over two centuries, recent infrastructure assessments and repair efforts—spurred by a vehicle strike earlier this fall—have underscored the necessity for its replacement.
Masonry repair conducted earlier this year addressed initial concerns stemming from the strike but indicated further action was required to secure the bridge’s safety and function moving forward. The upcoming replacement project allows for the enhancement of pedestrian accessibility while ensuring the bridge continues to meet the demands of local traffic in a safe and reliable manner.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution when navigating the surrounding detour routes and to remain attentive to posted traffic signage during the construction period. Weather conditions may impact the project’s schedule, and PennDOT advises drivers to stay informed through local updates.
