LANCASTER, PA — The Lancaster County Archives has recently been awarded a grant of $4,827.50 from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission. The funding comes as part of the Historical Archives & Records Care Grant and will be used to preserve an invaluable collection of Mechanic Lien Papers, dating back to 1869.
These papers provide an in-depth look into Lancaster County’s architectural past, offering a wealth of information about the builder, architect, date of construction, building materials, dimensions, and even the original blueprints of historical homes across Lancaster County. They offer a unique glimpse into the final years of Victorian architectural styles that once dominated the county’s landscape.
The preservation process for these documents is extensive. Acid-free boxes and folders, which prevent the degradation of the papers, will be purchased using the funds from the grant. Once preserved, these important historical records will be accessible to the public.
In addition to the physical records, the Lancaster County Archives has made a digital index available for residents to peruse online. This index allows users to explore thousands of other historical county documents from the comfort of their own homes.
“These lien papers are more than just old documents,” said a representative from the Lancaster County Archives. “They’re a tangible link to our past, providing invaluable insights for those conducting house history research or anyone interested in learning more about the rich architectural history of Lancaster.”
The preservation project is supported by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission’s Historical Archives and Records Care Grant, a program funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It represents the state’s commitment to safeguarding and sharing Pennsylvania’s rich historical heritage.
