Highlighting Student Talent at the Project MFG Maritime Welding Competition

PHILADELPHIA, PA — On October 22, 2024, Philly Shipyard and Rhoads Industries hosted the Project MFG Maritime Welding Competition, bringing together students from 15 local high schools and vocational training centers in Philadelphia. This event provided an exciting platform for young welders to demonstrate their skills and compete for esteemed prizes.

The competition challenged students to complete welding projects, requiring precision, adherence to safety protocols, and effective equipment handling. Judged by expert welders and industry professionals, participants were evaluated on weld quality, measurement accuracy, and problem-solving abilities.

At the end of the event, winners were celebrated for their exceptional performances. Johnny Smoker from Pennock’s Bridge TCHS clinched first place, earning a scholarship from the American Welding Society and an invitation to Project MFG’s National Maritime Championship. Second place went to Logan Rutkowski from Lehigh Career & Technical Institute, while Logan Albright from Western Montgomery CTC secured third place. All top winners received welding kits, including Lincoln Electric helmets, preparing them for future endeavors in the workforce.

The event underscored the importance of vocational education in equipping students with skills critical for modern industry demands. It also served as a networking opportunity for industry leaders to connect with emerging talent.

In tandem with the competition, the U.S. Navy Talent Pipeline Program organized a Career Discovery Day, attracting over 180 students from 17 Career and Technical Education institutions. This event aimed to connect students with industry leaders, fostering relationships that could influence their career paths in defense manufacturing. Deputy Flag Sponsor Senior Chief Paul Schiro delivered a keynote speech, highlighting the vital role of skilled professionals in national safety and the Navy’s commitment to developing future generations through programs like the Talent Pipeline.
