HOCKESSIN, DE — Delaware State Police are investigating a tragic two-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a young child and left multiple others injured on Sunday afternoon, March 2, 2025, in Hockessin.
The collision occurred at approximately 4:09 p.m. on Newport Gap Pike near Valley Lane. According to preliminary reports, a silver 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling southbound crossed into the northbound lane under circumstances still under investigation. It collided head-on with a gray 2017 Freightliner tractor-trailer that was traveling in the opposite direction.
The crash resulted in the death of a 2-year-old male passenger from Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, who succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital. His name is being withheld pending notification of family members. The Jeep’s 36-year-old male driver, also from Kennett Square, sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized. Three additional passengers—a 34-year-old woman, a 16-year-old male, and an 11-year-old female, all from the same town—were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Freightliner’s 60-year-old male driver from North East, Maryland, was not injured in the crash.
The accident caused the closure of Newport Gap Pike for approximately seven hours as investigators from the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit examined the scene and cleared the roadway.
