PHILADELPHIA, PA — In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing to help others?’” This sentiment sits at the heart of the 29th Annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service, set to take place on Monday, January 15, 2024.

A Tribute to Civil Rights

This year’s Day of Service theme pays homage to a significant milestone in America’s march toward equality: the 60th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, along with numerous partners, is proud to participate in this year’s event, marking an occasion of such historical importance.

Engaging in Service

The Day of Service offers Philadelphians a unique opportunity to honor Dr. King’s legacy through action. Whether you’re passionate about food security, civic engagement, environmental stewardship, or equitable access to information, there’s a service project just for you.

Volunteers can contribute through various avenues:

  • Food distribution and donation: Help alleviate hunger in our city by participating in food distributions or organizing donation drives.
  • Equitable information sessions: Share valuable information and resources to communities that may lack access, promoting equity and empowerment.
  • Park and recreation center cleanups: Join forces with fellow volunteers to beautify our city’s green spaces and recreational facilities, making them more inviting for all residents.
  • Voter registration: Encourage civic participation by assisting with voter registration drives, ensuring every voice in our community can be heard.

Register Now

Registration for the MLK Day of Service projects is now open. Information about service opportunities at Parks & Rec sites, as well as other locations throughout Philadelphia, can be found on the event’s website.
