Five-Points Intersection in Montgomery County to Undergo $14.2 Million Improvement Project

Lane closures

MONTGOMERY TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has unveiled a $14.2 million project aimed at improving travel and safety at the notoriously busy Five-Points Intersection in Montgomery Township, Montgomery County.

The intersection, which links Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike), Route 463 (Horsham Road/Cowpath Road), and Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road), will see utility work commence on Monday, March 4, and continue through Friday, March 8. Motorists are advised to expect lane closures from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on March 4 and 5, and from 7:00 PM to 3:00 AM the following morning from March 5 through 8.

The areas affected include Route 309 between North Wales Road and McLaughlin Road, Route 463 between Lansdale Avenue and North Wales Road, and Business U.S. 202 between Route 309 and Betty’s Avenue. Drivers should allow extra time for travel due to expected backups and delays.

The ambitious project will see PennDOT’s contractor, Road-Con Inc., install additional through lanes at the intersection approaches on both directions of Route 463 and southbound Route 309. This expansion will increase the current 15 travel lanes to 18, significantly improving traffic flow and reducing crashes.

Additional improvements will include upgrading and retiming signalization, installing sidewalks, ADA curb ramps, and guiderails, upgrading stormwater drainage, signage, and pavement markings; adjusting driveway access, and reducing erosion sediment.

The enhancements on Route 463 and Route 309 will notably improve traffic flow for westbound Route 463 motorists turning right onto northbound Business U.S. 202.

Funded entirely by federal dollars, this comprehensive project, undertaken by West Chester-based Road-Con, Inc., promises to deliver long-term benefits for the residents and commuters of Montgomery County. As always, these scheduled activities are weather dependent.
