READING, PA — FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company (FE PA), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE) operating as Met-Ed in eastern Pennsylvania, is nearing completion on a key project to enhance the reliability of its energy delivery system in northwestern York County. The initiative, set to conclude in April, aims to strengthen the power grid serving approximately 300 customers in the Dillsburg area.
The project involves replacing over 1.3 miles of outdated copper wire with larger-diameter aluminum wire, enabling the system to transport more electricity and better handle increasing demand. Crews are also upgrading 32 wooden poles, a range of crossarms, 40 fuses, and 149 porcelain insulators along a 13.2-kilovolt power line. The line stretches from a substation near Golf Course Road, moves east to Baltimore Street, and continues north to Welty Avenue.
“This proactive investment will help position our electric network to accommodate steady growth in York County, which has experienced an 8% increase in population since 2010,” said John Hawkins, FirstEnergy President, Pennsylvania.
Additionally, 49 wildlife guards are being installed to protect transformers, fuses, and switches from animal interference, a common cause of power outages. These steps are designed to boost service reliability, especially during peak usage periods in both hot and cold weather.
With these upgrades, Met-Ed ensures long-term improvements to the electrical infrastructure while meeting the growing energy needs of the community.
