Explore PennDOT’s Bold Plan: Transforming Route 741 with a New Roundabout

PennDOT

LANCASTER COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Engineering District 8-0 has announced an online plan display to discuss the anticipated intersection improvements on Route 741 (McGovernville Road) in Manheim Township. This initiative aims to enhance mobility and safety by integrating the currently separate intersections into a single, cohesive roundabout at the confluence of Route 741 and Apollo Drive.

The proposed project includes significant infrastructure enhancements such as horizontal and vertical alignment adjustments on both legs of Route 741, modifications to the Route 283 eastbound off- and on-ramps, and upgrades to Apollo Drive. Additional improvements will involve the removal of existing roadways, embankment grading, drainage enhancements, pavement and curb installations, as well as updated signage and pavement markings. To ensure visibility and safety, street lighting will be installed around and along each roundabout leg.

The project will necessitate the acquisition of temporary construction easements and permanent right-of-way to accommodate the construction footprint and stormwater management facilities. Construction is slated to commence in 2026, with completion projected for 2027. The plan incorporates a phased construction approach to maintain traffic flow during the initial stages, followed by strategically planned detours.

Public participation is encouraged, and details, including an interactive comment form, are accessible on the PennDOT District 8 website. Interested parties can navigate to the Public Meetings section under Resources on the PennDOT site, select Lancaster County, and click the tile labeled McGovernville Road Intersection Improvement. The digital plan display will remain available online until October 12, 2024.
