Expect Delays on I-95 in Northeast Philadelphia Due to Paving Operations

traffic alert expect delays

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Motorists planning to travel through Northeast Philadelphia next week should brace for traffic slowdowns on Interstate 95. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced paving operations as part of the ongoing reconstruction project at the Cottman Avenue Interchange.

On Wednesday, May 1, from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, drivers will encounter a left lane closure on both northbound and southbound I-95, stretching between the Academy Road and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges. The advisory from PennDOT strongly suggests allowing additional travel time to navigate the area, as significant backups and delays are anticipated. The completion of these activities hinges on favorable weather conditions.

This lane closure is essential for PennDOT’s contractors to proceed with placing the concrete deck on the inner section of the new southbound bridge safely. This step follows the completion of the outside sections of the new bridge last November, after which traffic was rerouted onto these parts to facilitate continued work on the bridge’s center section, expected to persist into mid-2024.

Travelers are encouraged to stay informed about the progress of the work and plan their routes accordingly to minimize inconvenience.
