MONTGOMERY TWP, PA — Motorists navigating through Montgomery Township should brace for potential delays next week as significant utility work is set to disrupt traffic flow at one of the area’s busiest crossroads. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced lane closures linked to a $14.2 million project aimed at enhancing travel and safety at the Five-Points Intersection, where Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike), Route 463 (Horsham Road/Cowpath Road), and Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road) converge.
From Monday, April 1, through Friday, April 5, drivers will encounter lane closures from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at key segments of these thoroughfares. Specifically, the affected areas include Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike) between North Wales Road and McLaughlin Road, Route 463 (Cowpath Road/Horsham Road) between Lansdale Avenue and North Wales Road, and Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road) between Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike) and Betty’s Avenue. These disruptions are part of ongoing efforts to improve one of Montgomery County’s most critical intersections.
Given the high volume of traffic that typically passes through this intersection, PennDOT advises motorists to anticipate backups and adjust their travel plans accordingly. Allowing extra time for commutes through these areas will be essential for navigating the expected delays smoothly. It’s important to note that the schedule for this work is contingent upon favorable weather conditions.
The intersection improvement project promises to significantly enhance the flow of traffic and reduce the frequency of crashes. Plans include adding additional through lanes on both directions of Route 463 (Horsham Road/Cowpath Road) and on southbound Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike), increasing the number of approach lanes to the intersection from 15 to 18. This expansion aims to alleviate congestion and improve overall travel efficiency.
In addition to roadway widening, the project encompasses a suite of enhancements designed to bolster safety and accessibility. Upgrades include retiming signalization, installing sidewalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps, enhancing stormwater drainage, and updating signage and pavement markings. The intersection’s redesign also focuses on improving access for westbound Route 463 (Horsham Road) motorists turning right onto northbound Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road).
Road-Con, Inc., a West Chester-based contractor, is leading the construction efforts, funded entirely by federal dollars. As the community looks forward to the long-term benefits of these comprehensive improvements, patience and caution will be vital for those traveling through the Five-Points Intersection during the upcoming week.
