PHILADELPHIA, PA — In a nod to the late ’90s pop-punk era, Evil Genius Beer Company is rolling out its latest concoction, “Work Sucks, I Know,” a beer that promises to transport drinkers back to the days of flannel shirts, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, and the angst of adolescence. The Philadelphia-based brewery will introduce this new offering at its Fishtown location with a unique Ditch Work Day event, offering free beer to participants on May 3rd.

Founded in 2011, Evil Genius has carved out a niche for itself in the craft beer market with its cleverly named brews that often allude to pop culture references like movie quotes, internet memes, and song lyrics. With “Work Sucks, I Know,” the company taps into the nostalgia of the ’90s alternative subculture, aiming to evoke fond memories alongside the enjoyment of a quality beer.

Trevor Hayward, Co-Founder of Evil Genius, emphasized the brewery’s goal of creating beers that trigger happy recollections. “We aim to bring back those positive, nostalgic memories from the ’90s alternative scene that many of us cherish, all while enjoying a great-tasting beer,” said Hayward.

“Work Sucks, I Know” stands out as the brewery’s lowest alcohol by volume (ABV) beer at just 5.0%, yet it doesn’t compromise on flavor. It boasts a rich hop character, thanks to the use of Galaxy and Citra hops, which impart a mix of tropical, stone fruit, and robust citrus flavors. Its light body and clean, dry finish are designed to leave drinkers reaching for another sip.

The beer’s launch is marked by Evil Genius’ Ditch Day celebration, where the taproom will open its doors early at noon, inviting guests to play hooky from work in exchange for a free taste of the new offering. Following the event, “Work Sucks, I Know” will be available for purchase starting May 6th across several states including CT, DE, MD, MI, NJ, OH, PA, and VA. Packaged in six-packs of twelve-ounce cans and kegs, the beer is expected to retail at around $11.99 per six-pack, prices varying by market.
