Essential Utilities Earns Spot on Newsweek’s Most Responsible Companies List for Fourth Consecutive Year

Essential Utilities

BRYN MAWR, PA — Essential Utilities Inc. (NYSE: WTRG) has once again been recognized as one of America’s Most Responsible Companies by Newsweek, marking the fourth consecutive year it has earned this distinction. The honor reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to integrating environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and operational excellence into its business practices.

“At Essential Utilities, we are driven by a deep responsibility to our customers, communities, and the environment,” said Christopher Franklin, Chairman and CEO of Essential. “Our progress reflects our belief that operational excellence and environmental stewardship go hand in hand to best serve our communities.”

The recognition is the result of Essential’s robust initiatives across the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) spectrum. Key achievements include a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2019 levels, with a goal of cutting emissions by 60% by 2035 through advanced infrastructure upgrades and renewable energy initiatives. The company also replaced over 1,000 miles of gas pipelines in Pennsylvania and Kentucky, enhancing system safety and reliability.

Essential’s dedication to water quality standards remains steadfast, as it achieved 99.8% compliance for drinking water in 2024, well above industry averages. The company also expanded renewable energy procurement, securing nearly 100% renewable electricity for operations in multiple states, including Pennsylvania and Illinois.

On the social front, Essential’s 2024 community outreach included $5 million in donations to initiatives focused on education, environmental sustainability, and economic development. This commitment underscores Essential’s role as an advocate for the approximately 5.5 million people it serves across nine U.S. states.

The 2025 Newsweek ranking evaluates over 2,000 U.S.-based public companies based on ESG data and an independent survey of American consumers. Essential improved its standing significantly this year, climbing to 165th overall—a jump from its 2024 rank of 401.
