PHILADELPHIA, PA — Girls Inc. of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey has announced Erin Elman as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective January 2, 2025. Elman, a seasoned leader in nonprofit management and arts education, steps into the role with over 30 years of experience and a clear commitment to empowering young women and advancing equity.

Elman previously served as Dean of Graduate & Professional Studies at the University of the Arts, where she led strategic growth initiatives, expanded scholarship opportunities, and developed impactful interdisciplinary programs. Her dedication to inclusion and innovation is reflected in her leadership of curriculum decolonization initiatives and her work in broadening access to education.

“As a woman and an artist, I am committed to leading by modeling values that ensure equity and social justice for women and girls,” Elman stated. “It is a great honor for me to join the Girls Inc. team as the next CEO and work in partnership with the incredible board and staff to support the organization’s critical mission of inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.”

Girls Inc. employs a “whole girl” approach, combining research-based programs, mentorship, and a supportive environment to foster confidence, critical thinking, and leadership skills in girls. Serving participants from over 40 schools, as well as shelters and juvenile justice facilities, the organization’s programs emphasize healthy decision-making, academic enrichment, and life skills.

Lori Garber, Chair of the Board of Directors, expressed enthusiasm about Elman’s appointment. “After an extensive search process, it became clear that Erin’s experience in both education and leadership, along with her passion for Girls Inc.’s mission, made her the ideal candidate for this position,” said Garber.

A longtime Philadelphia resident and Brooklyn native, Elman holds an MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking and an MA in Art Education from the University of the Arts, as well as a Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion from Cornell University. She is nationally recognized for her contributions to arts education and program development, having served on advisory boards such as the City of Philadelphia’s Cultural Advisory Committee and the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources initiative.

Elman will succeed Dena Herrin, who has led the organization for the past ten years. Herrin’s leadership significantly elevated Girls Inc.’s profile by expanding its programs, deepening community partnerships, and increasing its resources and reach.

“The Board of Directors is profoundly grateful for Dena’s transformational leadership over the past decade,” noted Garber. “Her contributions have left a lasting legacy, and we wish her continued success.”

With Elman at the helm, Girls Inc. looks to continue its mission of inspiring girls to value themselves and achieve their full potential, building on its 160-year history of advocacy and empowerment.
