READING, PA — EnerSys (NYSE: ENS) recently finalized a $199 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support the construction of a cutting-edge lithium-ion cell production facility in Greenville, South Carolina. The award, part of the DOE’s Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains program, underscores EnerSys’ role in strengthening domestic energy infrastructure.
The 500,000-square-foot facility will focus on manufacturing advanced lithium-ion cells for commercial, industrial, and defense applications, ensuring compliance with the U.S. Department of Defense’s (DOD) demand for domestically sourced batteries. By dedicating the production to EnerSys products, the plant will enhance the company’s energy storage solutions portfolio and bolster the U.S. energy supply chain. Construction is expected to begin in 2025, with commercial operations slated for 2028.
“This innovative facility is a critical step forward for EnerSys and the broader energy ecosystem,” shared an EnerSys representative. “It will meet the rigorous demands of defense and commercial customers while solidifying EnerSys’ position in the advanced energy storage market.”
The DOE award announcement builds on EnerSys’ prior statement in September 2024, highlighting the company’s strategic plans to develop a lithium-ion technology and manufacturing roadmap. The Greenville gigafactory is a centerpiece of these ambitions, reflecting the growing importance of reliable domestic battery production.
EnerSys continues to drive advancements in energy solutions, producing batteries and energy systems for telecommunications, defense, electric vehicles, and more across over 100 countries. With the DOE’s backing, this new facility positions EnerSys at the forefront of innovation in the energy sector.
