READING, PA — EnerSys (NYSE: ENS) has announced the successful launch of its ABSL™ lithium-ion space battery aboard NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft. The mission, which took off on October 14, 2024, from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center using a SpaceX Falcon Heavy Rocket, aims to explore Jupiter’s moon Europa for signs of life.
The Europa Clipper mission, managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in collaboration with the John Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, will perform nearly 50 flybys of Europa. Its scientific instruments are designed to analyze the icy surface and subsurface ocean of the moon, offering insights into its habitability.
Central to the spacecraft’s operation is the EnerSys’ ABSL™ lithium-ion battery. The sophisticated power source comprises three 8s72p modules that deliver over 540 ampere-hours through a 28-volt system, ensuring reliable energy for flight and scientific functions. This battery is engineered to minimize magnetic interference, crucial for the sensitive instruments onboard.
“EnerSys is honored to play a critical role in powering the Europa Clipper mission,” stated Mark Matthews, President of Specialty Global at EnerSys. He highlighted the collaboration with NASA as a testament to the company’s engineering excellence and its decades-long partnership in developing high-performance energy solutions for space exploration.
With this mission, EnerSys highlights its pivotal role in advancing space exploration technology, supporting efforts to unravel the mysteries of one of the solar system’s most intriguing moons.
