LANCASTER, PA — The Lancaster Stormers are making strategic moves to bolster their roster for the upcoming 2024 season. The team announced on Wednesday that they have re-signed fan-favorite outfielder Shawon Dunston Jr., and acquired Gaige Howard from the Schaumburg Boomers of the Frontier League.

Dunston, 31, is no stranger to the Stormers’ lineup, preparing for his third tour of duty with the team. The left-handed batter, son of former Cubs and Giants shortstop Shawon Dunston Sr., has made impressive contributions to the Stormers in his previous two seasons. With a batting average of .281, 17 doubles, nine triples, 14 homers, and 64 RBI, Dunston’s performance on the field has been pivotal. His speed has also proven invaluable, stealing 51 bases and scoring 97 runs. Dunston’s postseason prowess included a leadoff homer in the Championship Series against High Point in 2022 and four stolen bases in the wins over Gastonia that clinched Lancaster’s second consecutive crown.

Manager Ross Peeples praised Dunston’s skills, saying, “Junior brings speed to our lineup and can play all three outfield spots. He runs the bases very well, and his approach to the game brings the value that we are looking for.”

The Stormers are also welcoming new talent to the fold. Gaige Howard, 25, joins the team after spending two seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers system at Class A Rancho Cucamonga and a stint with the Schaumburg Boomers. Howard, also a left-handed batter, hit .307 with six homers and 49 RBI while stealing 25 bases during his time with the Boomers. Known for his discipline at the plate, Howard finished third in the league in walks with 78 and has consistently walked more than he has struck out over the last five years.

“Gaige had a great year in the Frontier League last year and wants the chance to compete at a higher level,” said Peeples. “He has a great approach at the plate and great hand-eye coordination and can play all three outfield spots.”

The Stormers are set to begin their quest for their third consecutive title with the season opener at Long Island on April 25. The home schedule kicks off on April 30 against the Atlantic League’s new entry, the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars. With Dunston’s return and Howard’s addition, the Lancaster Stormers are poised for another exciting season of baseball.
