DELAWARE — The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) announced a temporary closure of a portion of the Cape Henlopen State Park fishing pier on Friday. The last 145 feet of the 1,300-foot World War II-era pier is now off-limits as part of an ongoing annual structural analysis.

The DNREC Division of Parks and Recreation decided to close this part of the pier while the annual engineering review takes place. This in-depth evaluation of the entire structure includes an underwater review of the pilings by a professional dive team.

At this time, it remains uncertain when this section of the pier will reopen or the extent of repairs needed. Over the past 15 years, the pier has undergone multiple repair projects. In 2012, a portion of the pier was removed due to safety concerns. The most recent significant project took place in 2021 when multiple pile jackets were added to select pilings, aimed at extending the pier’s longevity.

Despite these efforts, it’s clear the pier is well beyond its life expectancy. Built during the World War II era, the pier has weathered countless storms and the relentless effects of saltwater. While it has served as a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike for fishing and enjoying the scenic views, safety remains a top priority for DNREC.

Cape Henlopen State Park is a cornerstone of Delaware’s natural beauty, attracting thousands of visitors each year who enjoy a wide range of activities from ocean swimming, boating, fishing, and kayaking to clamming, paddle-boarding, and more.

While the closure may impact some activities, the DNREC assures park-goers that the majority of the pier remains open, and they are committed to ensuring the structure’s safety and structural integrity. The results of the ongoing structural analysis will guide future actions to maintain the pier as a safe and enjoyable destination.
