WILMINGTON, DE — In a heartwarming celebration of the Christmas season, the Office of Communication of the Diocese of Wilmington has created a captivating video montage showcasing Nativity crèches from Catholic churches across Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The video, accompanied by instrumental Christmas hymns, is set to premiere on the Diocese of Wilmington’s YouTube channel on Sunday, December 17, 2023, at 3:00 p.m.
The initiative was launched last Christmas when the diocese invited its 56 parishes and 18 mission churches to submit a photograph of their crèche. This unique project commemorates the 800th anniversary of the first ever Nativity scene, established in 1223 by St. Francis of Assisi in the Italian village of Greccio. St. Francis aimed to underscore the humble circumstances of Jesus’s birth and inspire locals to appreciate the Christmas story more deeply. His tradition of recreating the birth of Jesus, complete with live animals and a hay-filled manger, continues today in churches, homes, and public squares worldwide.
Robert Krebs, Director of Communications for the Diocese of Wilmington, expressed his admiration for the artistic representation of Christ’s birth in these scenes from various churches. “Some are very elaborate, featuring dozens of pieces, while some simply depict the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and the Child Jesus. All are beautiful in their own way,” he said.
Krebs also encourages families to watch the 12 ½ minute video together, discuss their favorite scenes, and attempt to identify the scene from their parish. He suggests playing the video during Christmas gatherings, allowing everyone to enjoy the holy music and images.
This festive season, immerse yourself in the rich tradition and humble origins of the Nativity scene with this enchanting video. Let the beauty and simplicity of these artistic representations inspire a deeper appreciation for the Christmas story.
