DOVER, DE — The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) introduced its latest accessibility upgrade on July 12: an all-terrain Action Trackchair. This wheelchair, donated through the Ford Bronco Wild Fund, is the first of its kind available for public use in the state.

Enhancing Access to Nature

The unveiling took place at the Deerfield Clubhouse in White Clay Creek State Park. The event marked a significant step forward in making Delaware’s natural landscapes more accessible to individuals with mobility challenges. The Action Trackchair’s unique features, such as its “Tilt on the fly” capability, allow users to adjust the chair’s angle for comfort while navigating various terrains, including mud, sand, snow, and water.

“Like DNREC, the Bronco Wild Fund aims to connect people to the outdoors by increasing access, and the Trackchair does just that,” said DNREC Secretary Shawn M. Garvin. “We are grateful to Ford for granting us this chair to allow even more visitors to enjoy the great outdoors.”

Jeremy Towery’s Demonstration

Jared Towery, who became paraplegic in 2021 while training for the U.S. Marines at the First State Military Academy, demonstrated the Trackchair’s capabilities. His grandmother, Linda Lopez, has been a relentless advocate for disability accessibility upgrades throughout Delaware.

Strategic Accessibility Improvements

The Trackchair is part of DNREC’s broader initiative to enhance accessibility across the state’s parks. According to DNREC’s Strategic Plan, over 70 accessible amenities will be added or improved. These updates include mobility mats, beach wheelchairs, adaptive kayak launches, paved paths, accessible hunting stands, additional all-terrain wheelchairs, and wheelchair-friendly campsites.

National Recognition and Support

Delaware received the Action Trackchair through a nationally competitive grant. The grant was one of seven provided by the Bronco Wild Fund Access Grants in collaboration with the National Association of State Park Directors (NASPD). The Bronco Wild Fund focuses on increasing access to nature, promoting preservation, and encouraging stewardship of the outdoors.

NASPD unites state park leaders to foster collaboration and share best practices for sustainable management of public lands.

Reservation Information

The Action Trackchair will be housed at White Clay Creek State Park, which boasts the largest trail system in Delaware’s state parks. To reserve the Trackchair, interested individuals can contact the White Clay Creek State Park Office at 302-368-6900.

Making Outdoor Recreation Inclusive

The introduction of the Action Trackchair signifies a major advancement in making outdoor recreation accessible to all. For individuals with mobility challenges, the ability to explore trails and natural landscapes independently is transformative. It fosters inclusivity and ensures that everyone, regardless of physical ability, can enjoy the beauty of Delaware’s state parks.

This initiative also signals a broader commitment to accessibility and sustainability. By enhancing public lands with adaptive equipment and features, Delaware sets a precedent for other states to follow. Such efforts underscore the importance of making nature accessible to everyone, fostering a stronger connection to the environment and promoting overall well-being.
