WILMINGTON, DE — Keith Gibson, who embarked on a brutal crime spree in the summer of 2021, has been convicted of 25 charges, including two counts of murder. Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings announced the verdict on Tuesday, revealing that Gibson now faces a mandatory life sentence.
The series of crimes committed by Gibson, which resulted in the death of two individuals and left four others injured, has sent shockwaves across the state. This case has been particularly challenging due to its sheer brutality and cold-blooded nature.
Gibson’s violent rampage began on May 15, 2021, when he shot and killed Leslie Ruiz-Basilio, 28, during a robbery at a Metro PCS store located on Kirkwood Highway in Elsmere. Gibson also stole Ruiz-Basilio’s vehicle. Less than a month later, he shot and killed Ronald Wright, 42, during a street robbery and assaulted another victim. In the following three days, Gibson robbed and/or assaulted an additional three victims, one of which was an attempted murder. Gibson was eventually arrested on June 8 in relation to the robbery of a Wilmington Rite-Aid.
Attorney General Jennings praised the hard work of the prosecutors and law enforcement officers involved in this case. She expressed relief that Gibson, who was armed and wearing a bulletproof vest at the time of his arrest, was apprehended before he could cause more harm.
Gibson’s convictions include four counts of Murder 1st Degree, Attempted Murder 1st Degree, thirteen counts of Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony, four counts of Robbery 1st Degree, Conspiracy 2nd Degree, Theft of a Motor Vehicle, and Wearing Body Armor During the Commission of a Felony.
Additional charges against Gibson, including several drug offenses, are still pending in Superior Court.
The conviction was secured by Deputy Attorneys General John Downs and Ipek Kurul, with assistance from Deputy Attorneys General Matt Frawley and Sam Kenney. The prosecution received support from Senior Paralegal Stacey Coupe and Social Workers Donna Lindsey and Marilyn Torres. The investigation was led by the Wilmington and Elsmere Police Departments, with support from multiple local and federal law enforcement agencies.
As the state awaits Gibson’s sentencing, Attorney General Jennings expressed her deepest sympathies for the victims and their families, who continue to heal from the horrific ordeal. She assured them that justice has been served and that Gibson will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
