WILMINGTON, DE — In a significant victory for the Delaware Department of Justice, Timothy Thomas, a 34-year-old man from Newark, was sentenced to 25 years in prison on January 5th for a series of convictions including second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a person prohibited. The sentence follows Thomas’s guilty plea in October.
The charges stemmed from an investigation into the fatal shooting of 40-year-old Andre Hickson on July 6, 2020. Thomas engaged in a verbal altercation with Hickson at an auto repair facility on the 800 block of Wilmington’s East 13th Street. The argument escalated, and Thomas pulled out a gun, shooting Hickson in the chest before fleeing the scene. Hickson was rushed to Christiana Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
“When you commit a crime with a gun, you become our first priority,” said Attorney General Kathy Jennings. “This was an excellent result from our team and the Wilmington Police Department. May it bring peace to the victim’s family.”
Chief Wilfredo Campos also commended the efforts of the detectives in solving the case and the prosecutors who helped secure the conviction. “This lengthy prison sentence reaffirms our commitment to delivering justice on behalf of victims of crime, and our resolve to hold violent offenders like this accountable for their actions,” he said.
The resolution of Thomas’s case consolidates charges from a total of five cases pending against him. These include possession of a firearm by a person prohibited and strangulation from 2020, assault in the third degree and malicious interference from 2021, and theft of a motor vehicle from 2021, in addition to the murder of Hickson.
