HARRINGTON, DE — Delaware’s thriving farmers markets have achieved a new milestone, posting record sales of $4.14 million in 2023, according to the Delaware Department of Agriculture (DDA). The figure marks an increase of $437,136 from 2022 and underscores the growing consumer preference for fresh, locally-sourced produce.

“The success of a farmers market relies on three key points – the farmers who grow various products to bring to market each week, an interactive market manager who engages their community to support our family farms, and consumers who want to purchase the freshest, locally grown food to feed their families,” said Delaware Secretary of Agriculture Michael T. Scuse.

The notable surge in sales not only benefits local producers but also bolsters the local economy. The 17 community-run farmers markets across the state are managed by municipalities, business groups, farmers, or market associations, with the DDA providing support and marketing assistance.

Fresh produce accounted for 52% of total sales, with the remainder coming from products such as meats, cheeses, jellies, breads, salsa, eggs, or honey. This indicates a robust demand for a diverse range of locally produced goods.

Kathy Jackson, DDA Marketing Specialist, highlighted the role of consumers in this success. “I believe this sales record showcases the fact that residents and visitors to our state want to continue to support the family farms that produce Delaware Grown fruits, vegetables, meats, and value-added products.”

The record-breaking sales have significant implications. They underscore the importance of local agriculture in the state’s economy and the effectiveness of community-run markets in promoting these products. Moreover, they reflect a broader trend towards healthier, more sustainable eating practices, with consumers increasingly opting for fresh, locally sourced foods.

Looking ahead to the 2024 market season, which begins in May, the DDA will continue to support local agriculture through initiatives such as the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program. This program, open to Delaware residents who are 60 years or older and meet income eligibility requirements, further extends the reach of farmers markets.

This achievement is a testament to the resilience and importance of local agriculture in Delaware. As the new market season approaches, the state’s farmers markets stand as vibrant examples of community support for sustainable, locally sourced produce. Their continued success will undoubtedly play a critical role in the growth and vitality of Delaware’s agricultural sector.
