DELAWARE — The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) has teamed up with the Delaware Center for Horticulture (DCH) to host a tree recycling event, TreeCycle. The initiative encourages families in Delaware to recycle their live holiday trees, promoting environmental sustainability.
TreeCycle will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at the DCH parking lot located at 1810 North Dupont Street, Wilmington, Delaware. In case of inclement weather, the event will be postponed to Sunday, January 7.
In collaboration with the Davey Tree Expert Company, the live holiday trees collected during the event will be chipped using commercial chipper/grinders. The resulting wood chips will be used in various DCH gardens, the Shearman Street community garden, and other public landscapes throughout Wilmington.
To ensure the safety of equipment and operators, all decorations including ornaments, tinsel, fake snow, light strings, and stands must be removed from the trees before they are chipped. The event will only accept live trees; artificial trees will not be accepted for recycling.
Republic Services is providing additional support for this environmentally-friendly initiative. While the event is free of charge, donations will be accepted to benefit DCH’s community forestry efforts, contributing to the preservation and enhancement of Wilmington’s urban forest.
The TreeCycle event is an excellent opportunity for Delaware residents to give their holiday trees a second life while contributing to the local community’s greening efforts.
