LANCASTER, PA — Aryton Miller, 28, faced the music on Monday as he was handed a sentence of 2 to 7 years in state prison. An audacious incident occurred in Columbia, Lancaster County last May when an unlocked, running vehicle was attempted to be hijacked in broad daylight, leaving the affected family’s sense of security completely shattered.
The scene unfolded on the morning of May 6, 2022, when the Columbia Borough Police Department rushed to Cherry Street following reports of a vehicle theft in progress. Witnesses were aghast as they recounted how Miller, donning rubber gloves in a brazen display, crept up behind the vehicle while the unsuspecting owner and her family were busy unloading it. In a heart-stopping moment, Miller swung open the driver’s side door and clambered inside, blatantly ignoring the protests of one of the victims who tried to intervene.
Assistant District Attorney Christopher Miller did not mince words during the sentencing, pointing out the daylight robbery as a blatant invasion of privacy. “This crime happened in broad daylight when a woman and her daughter should be safe,” he stated, emphasizing the lasting trauma inflicted on the family.
However, the plot took a turn when Miller, finding himself cornered, eventually exited the vehicle only to be detained by the victim’s husband until the authorities arrived. During the sentencing hearing, Miller’s defense painted a picture of a man under the grip of drug addiction, pleading for leniency as he was reportedly undergoing treatment.
Yet, ADA Miller highlighted the defendant’s unrepentant demeanor and troubling criminal history as ample reason for a sterner sentence. “You have a guy who has graduated from using drugs to selling drugs to now preying on the innocent citizens of Lancaster County,” he asserted.
Judge Jeffery Wright, taking a stand for justice, opted for a sentence at the higher end of the spectrum, underscoring the importance of accountability. “Part of recovery is making amends for what you did during your addiction,” Wright remarked, setting a precedent for future cases.
