PHILADELPHIA, PA — Shimon Braun, Holocaust survivor and influential choreographer, is set to launch his memoir, A Choreographic Journey of Survival and Triumph. The book recounts his incredible life’s story, tracing his path from a young refugee escaping war-torn Poland to becoming a groundbreaking figure in the dance world.

To celebrate the release, Braun will host a Champagne Book Signing on Saturday, May 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. at CSz Philadelphia, formerly home to his renowned Jazz Dance Center and acclaimed dance company, WAVES.

Braun’s life is a testament to resilience and creativity. After fleeing Poland as a child refugee in 1938 and navigating life across five countries by age 10, he redirected the course of American dance. WAVES, founded under his direction, was praised as “A Phenomenon” by The New York Times. His innovative technique, blending classical ballet, gymnastics, and street dance, introduced breakdancing to professional stages, captivating audiences in iconic venues like the Academy of Music in Philadelphia and London’s Royal Festival Hall.

Christine Cox, Co-Founder and Artistic Director of BalletX, noted Braun’s enduring legacy, saying, “When WAVES came on the scene in the ’80s under Shimon’s direction, it truly caught my eye. The movement was so full, dynamic, and inspiring… it shook Philadelphia up. Congratulations to Shimon for making a lasting impression on the dance world.”

Braun’s influence extended beyond his performances. Every WAVES show concluded in standing ovations, and legendary artists, including Marcel Marceau, admired his work. His memoir intertwines the stories of his survival, artistic vision, and life philosophy, offering an intimate glimpse into the man behind the iconic dance revolution.

“Shimon Braun is an artist, a dancer, a survivor, and a true citizen of the universe,” said actress Monica Horan Rosenthal, known for her role in Everyone Loves Raymond. “His story is dance history, world history, and life philosophy all rolled into one. I’m thrilled it will now be shared with readers through his captivating book.”

As WAVES marks its 50th anniversary, Braun continues to inspire the next generation of dancers and creators. The Champagne Book Signing will not only celebrate his memoir but also honor the legacy of a man whose work transcends art and history. For those who have admired WAVES or simply seek inspiration, this event offers a unique opportunity to meet a true trailblazer.
