LANCASTER, PA — A Columbia man has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old, whose courageous actions and testimony brought the vile acts to light. John Wakefield Jr., 48, will now face 5-12 years in state prison, a sentence delivered by Judge Jeffery Wright on Monday afternoon, following a conviction that has shaken the local community to its core.

The verdict came after a gripping trial in December 2023, where jurors found Wakefield guilty of multiple charges, including statutory sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault of a person less than 16, endangering the welfare of children, corruption of minors, and indecent assault of a person less than 16. A pivotal moment in the case was the victim’s ingenious use of a hidden camera to record the final assault — a piece of evidence that played a crucial role during the trial.

Prosecuting Assistant District Attorney Christopher Miller praised the victim’s bravery, stating, “(These offenses) would’ve stayed in the dark and would’ve never come to light without the victim’s actions.” This sentiment was echoed by Judge Wright, who hailed the victim as a hero for their strength and determination to seek justice.

Wakefield, a former wrestling coach, and his wife shockingly testified during the trial that the abuse was merely “wrestling.” However, this defense crumbled under the weight of the evidence presented, including the damning video recorded by the victim. The abuse, which spanned from February through September 2022, was finally exposed when the victim handed the recording to a neighbor, prompting a call to the police and an investigation that would uncover the disturbing truth.

Judge Wright’s sentencing reflected the gravity of Wakefield’s crimes, with consecutive terms ensuring a substantial period behind bars. Furthermore, Wakefield must register as a sex offender with the Pennsylvania State Police for life under Megan’s Law, marking him indefinitely for his heinous actions.

Columbia Borough Police Detective Matthew Leddy, who filed charges and testified during the trial, played a vital role in the investigation that led to Wakefield’s conviction. As the community grapples with the aftermath of this shocking case, the victim’s bravery stands as a beacon of hope and resilience, proving that even in the darkest of times, justice can prevail.
