LANCASTER, PA — A 29-year-old Columbia man was handed a hefty prison sentence last week after a violent altercation with paramedics and a Lancaster City Bureau of Police officer earlier this year. Jeremic Medina-Dorta, from the 300 block of Mill Street, will spend between 4 and 14 years behind bars for his actions during the troubling incident.

On February 12, 2022, around 6:11 p.m., a Lancaster EMS medic crew and a police officer responded to a report of an overdose in the 200 block of N. Arch Street. Upon arrival, they found Medina-Dorta in distress and attempted to provide him with medical treatment.

However, the situation quickly escalated when Medina-Dorta became agitated and began to kick and flail violently. During attempts to restrain him, the EMS crew discovered that he was armed with a knife. One medic suffered a laceration to their abdomen while another sustained bruising from being kicked and punched.

In a terrifying turn of events, Medina-Dorta managed to grab the police officer’s holstered firearm during the struggle and pulled the trigger. The EMS crew reported hearing a pop consistent with a gunshot, but miraculously, no one was struck by a bullet.

Medina-Dorta pleaded guilty in October to a litany of charges, including four counts of aggravated assault, six counts of recklessly endangering another person, two counts of criminal mischief, and disarming a law enforcement officer. Lancaster County Judge Merrill Spahn delivered the sentence last Thursday.

First Deputy District Attorney Cody Wade prosecuted the case, and Lancaster City Bureau of Police Detective Steve Owens filed the charges. This sentence serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences for those who choose to harm the very people dedicated to saving lives in our community.
