WILMINGTON, DE — Delaware-based healthcare provider ChristianaCare has been honored for achieving “meritorious” outcomes in surgical patient care. The recognition comes from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Clinical Congress, which singled out ChristianaCare as one of just 78 institutions out of 615 nationwide.

This marks the tenth time ChristianaCare has been recognized through the ACS’s National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP). The NSQIP is the only program of its kind, nationally validating measures to enhance the care of surgical patients.

“Patients can trust that when they come to ChristianaCare for surgery, they are receiving care from a team with a long track record of national recognition for outstanding quality and safety,” said Matthew Rubino, MD, MBA, FACS, interim chair of ChristianaCare’s Department of Surgery.

The latest honor recognizes ChristianaCare’s delivery of perioperative care within various specialties, including general, colorectal, neurologic, orthopedic, oral and maxillofacial, and otorhinolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat) surgery. The award covers Christiana Hospital and Wilmington Hospital, along with the Christiana Surgicenter in Newark, Delaware. Together, these facilities conduct nearly 38,000 surgical procedures annually, placing them 46th in volume among health systems across the nation.

The ACS NSQIP tracks surgical results 30 days post-operation and makes risk adjustments to account for differences among patient populations and acuity levels. Hospitals participating in the program must track the outcomes of both inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures. The resulting data analysis helps guide patient safety initiatives within the hospital and impacts the overall quality of surgical care.

ChristianaCare’s ACS NSQIP recognition acknowledged its performance in eight critical clinical areas: mortality, cardiac arrest and heart attack, pneumonia, unplanned intubation, ventilator use for more than 48 hours, renal failure, surgical site infections, and urinary tract infection.

ChristianaCare’s recognition by the ACS serves as a testament to its dedication to excellence in surgical care and an affirmation of its mission to serve the community with high-quality, safe surgical services.
