WILMINGTON, DE — ChristianaCare has announced an investment of $1 million in 19 local nonprofit organizations across Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.
This funding, announced Thursday at a special event held at Ezion Fair Baptist Church in Wilmington’s Southbridge neighborhood, was granted through ChristianaCare’s Community Investment Fund. The fund aims to enhance the collective ability of communities to address social, environmental, and behavioral factors impacting health.
Bettina Tweardy Riveros, chief public affairs officer and chief health equity officer at ChristianaCare, emphasized the importance of partnerships to improve health equity and address social drivers of health. She noted, “While ChristianaCare provides excellent health care, we also understand that we are not the experts on every social driver of health. And that’s why we are committed to strengthening these organizations and enhancing their ability to make a positive impact.”
Since its establishment in 2019, ChristianaCare’s Community Investment Fund has contributed over $4 million to 52 community organizations. These investments form a key part of ChristianaCare’s commitment to community benefit activities.
The latest batch of awardees will utilize the funding to support health improvement initiatives in high-need communities. These initiatives span a range of health-related needs, such as safe housing, access to nutritious food, and even addressing climate change, recently highlighted by the White House as a social driver of health.
Among the recipients is Delaware Humanities, a nonprofit dedicated to providing educational and cultural opportunities. The organization plans to use the grant to develop environmental justice toolkits to facilitate discussions about environmental issues in Delaware. Good Neighbors Home Repair, based in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, will use its grant to expand free home repair services to low-income households, thereby making their homes safer and healthier.
The selection of recipients was based on the quality of their proposals, implementation plans, and alignment with the key priorities of ChristianaCare’s Community Health Needs Assessment and Community Health Implementation Plan. The funded initiatives will be implemented throughout the upcoming year.
The 19 latest recipients of ChristianaCare’s Community Investment Fund include AIDS Delaware, Bayside Community Network, Inc., Children & Families First, Cornerstone West CDC, Deep Roots, Inc., Delaware 211, Delaware Center for Justice, Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Delaware Humanities, Delaware Interfaith Power & Light, Good Neighbors Home Repair, Green Beret Project, Healthy Food for Healthy Kids, Project New Start, Saint Patrick’s Center, Sussex County Habitat for Humanity, The Resurrection Center, YMCA of Delaware, and YWCA Delaware.
