EAST HEMPFIELD TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the temporary closure of Centerville Road in East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, from March 7 to March 11. The closure is part of the ongoing Centerville Road Improvement Project, a comprehensive effort to enhance infrastructure in the region.
The closure will occur just south of the Route 30 bridge and north of Old Tree Drive to allow for the reconstruction of a railroad crossing by Norfolk Southern. Crews will perform excavation, temporary relocation of the gate system, and conduit installation for upgraded signals and gates. Work will begin at 8:00 PM on Friday, March 7, and is scheduled for completion by 6:00 AM on Tuesday, March 11, weather permitting.
A designated detour will guide motorists along Hempland Road, Donerville Road, and Route 462 (Columbia Avenue). Travelers are advised to expect congestion and potential delays on the detour route and to avoid the area if possible.
During the closure, PennDOT’s contractor, JD Eckman, Inc., will coordinate with Norfolk Southern to expedite work under the $36.3 million Centerville Road Interchange Improvement Project. The project involves roadway widening, structure replacement, Superpave overlay, guiderail enhancements, traffic signal updates, ADA improvements, and other updates. The work spans Centerville Road from Cornerstone Drive to Marietta Avenue (Route 23), with some portions extending into Manor Township.
Expected for completion by August 2025, the improvement project aims to improve traffic flow and safety across a key transportation corridor. Once finalized, the upgrades will enhance access for local residents, businesses, and commuters, fostering long-term growth and improved mobility in the area.
