Centerville Road Closure Announced for Rail Crossing Upgrade and Widening Project

Road work - traffic alert

EAST HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP, PA — Motorists in Lancaster County should prepare for significant travel disruptions this weekend as Centerville Road will be closed through Tuesday, March 11, at 6 AM. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the closure as part of the ongoing Centerville Road Improvement Project.

The closure affects Centerville Road near the bridge over Route 30, spanning south to Old Tree Drive. Norfolk Southern crews is reconstructing the railroad crossing to accommodate the road’s widening, which involves excavation, temporary relocation of gate systems, and installation of new signal conduits.

Drivers are to be detoured via Hempland Road, Donerville Road, and Route 462 (Columbia Avenue), which could lead to congestion on alternate routes. Authorities advise avoiding the area if possible to minimize delays.

PennDOT has stated that J.D. Eckman, Inc., the project’s primary contractor, will work alongside Norfolk Southern to expedite construction during the closure. Additional lane shifts will also take place from Old Tree Drive to Columbia Avenue starting Friday morning. This preparatory work marks another step toward the project’s ultimate goal of improving traffic flow and safety along Centerville Road.

The Centerville Road Improvement Project is a broad infrastructure effort extending from Cornerstone Drive to Marietta Avenue, with enhancements that include replacing structures, widening lanes, resurfacing, drainage upgrades, and installing new traffic signals. Part of the work also overlaps Manor Township.

The $36.3 million project commenced under PennDOT’s direction and aims for completion by August 2025. Residents and commuters should expect periodic disruptions as construction progresses.
