EAST HEMPFIELD TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the temporary closure of Centerville Road as part of the ongoing Centerville Road Interchange Improvement Project in East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County. The closure will allow Norfolk Southern crews to reconstruct the railroad crossing just south of the bridge over Route 30.
The closure is scheduled to begin at 8:00 PM on Friday, March 7, and remain in effect until 6:00 AM on Tuesday, March 11, weather permitting. A detour will redirect traffic via Hempland Road, Donerville Road, and Route 462 (Columbia Avenue). Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible, as congestion and delays are expected along the detour route.
The project involves excavating the existing crossing, temporarily relocating the gate system, and installing conduits for the new signals and gate, according to PennDOT. Crews from J.D. Eckman, Inc., the project’s prime contractor, will coordinate with Norfolk Southern to expedite work during the closure.
The project is part of a $36.3 million initiative focused on improving safety and traffic flow in the area. It includes structure replacement, roadway widening, base replacement, overlay, drainage updates, ADA improvements, and other upgrades. The work spans Centerville Road from Cornerstone Drive to Marietta Avenue (Route 23) and Marietta Avenue from Centerville Road to Stony Battery Road, with completion slated for August 2025.
By accelerating construction during the closure, project leaders aim to minimize overall disruptions for area residents and travelers. Stay ahead of delays—visit the MyChesCo Traffic Center now for real-time updates and detour guidance!
