CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — Cencora, formerly known as AmerisourceBergen, is advancing pharmacy education with the introduction of two new initiatives aimed at deepening pharmacy residents’ understanding of the pharmacy supply chain and its critical role in healthcare. These programs are designed to equip upcoming pharmacy professionals with the skills necessary to navigate and lead in the complex world of pharmaceutical distribution.
On July 1, Cencora kicked off the Pharmacy Supply Chain Residency Forum, a 12-month program that involves 16 pharmacy residents from health systems across the United States. This initiative includes a blend of three virtual and two in-person sessions, allowing residents to gain comprehensive insights into wholesale distribution and its integration with patient care. Participants are carefully selected and nominated by their respective health systems, ensuring a diverse and qualified cohort.
Looking ahead to the summer of 2025, Cencora plans to launch the Combined PGY1/PGY2 Corporate Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (CPAL) with Masters Residency Programs. This two-year program, developed in collaboration with four esteemed health systems—Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Geisinger Health System, Henry Ford Health, and UC Davis Health—focuses on pharmacy supply chain management. It offers a combination of on-site and remote work experiences. During the PGY1 year, residents will engage with supply chain principles at the health systems’ sites, while the PGY2 year will provide remote corporate experiences, preparing them to become leaders in corporate pharmacy.
Cencora has initiated the Residency Accreditation process by applying for Pre-Candidate status with the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP), underscoring its commitment to excellence in pharmacy education.
“Cencora is proud to present the Pharmacy Supply Chain Residency Forum and Corporate Pharmacy Administration and Leadership with Masters Residency Programs as part of our ongoing commitment to investing in pharmacy education—and on a larger scale—the future of the pharmacy supply chain,” stated Matt Glucksmann, SVP & President, Health System and Government Services at Cencora. “By exposing and training residents on the critical role of wholesalers and other key stakeholders in patient care, we strive to develop the next generation of pharmacy supply chain leaders and equip top talent to meet evolving market needs.”
These programs introduce participants to vital supply chain concepts, including wholesaler distribution, health system leadership, inventory management, and medication cost strategies, positioning the pharmacy supply chain as a promising career path.
