PHILADELPHIA, PA — In a groundbreaking initiative, WHYY, StoryCorps, and Temple University have joined forces to launch “Brightness in Black,” a program aimed at capturing the vibrant and multifaceted stories of the Black community. This collaboration is part of StoryCorps’ 2024 Mobile Tour and seeks to spotlight the joy, resilience, and cultural pride intrinsic to Black experiences.
Positioned at Temple University until September 6, the StoryCorps airstream invites participants to share their personal narratives. This initiative is especially significant as it strives to counter stereotypes and amplify diverse voices within the Black community. Bill Marrazzo, President & CEO of WHYY, emphasized the importance of this partnership: “WHYY is committed to giving a voice to those often not heard, a platform to share everyone’s stories and a trusted space for unbiased news and conversation.”
StoryCorps, known for its vast archive of over 700,000 interviews, continues to celebrate human stories through various media, including NPR broadcasts and podcasts. “Brightness in Black” builds on this legacy by engaging individuals in meaningful conversations and community events, fostering inclusivity and understanding.
Participants can either attend in-person recordings at the Temple University campus or opt for virtual sessions, ensuring accessibility for all. With support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and in collaboration with the American Folklife Center, this initiative promises to enrich the understanding of Black life in America. Through “Brightness in Black,” WHYY, StoryCorps, and Temple University are not just collecting stories; they are weaving a richer tapestry of the Black experience for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
