PHILADELPHIA, PA —The cherished tradition of holiday giving continues in Old City with the 5th Annual Andy Chan Holiday Block Party, set to take place on Friday, December 20th, from 4 PM to 9 PM. The event will unfold along 2nd Street, between Market and Chestnut Streets, uniting the community in the spirit of generosity and seasonal cheer.
Organized by the Families Behind the Badge Children’s Foundation and members of the law enforcement community, the block party raises crucial funds for Philadelphia Highway Patrol Officer Andy Chan and other first responders. Severely injured in the line of duty in early 2019, Officer Chan remains incapacitated and requires extensive, ongoing care. His family, including his wife Teng and their two young children, are among the beneficiaries of this heartfelt event.
This year’s block party will also extend its support to eight families of critically injured or fallen first responders who have endured immense hardship in 2024. These include members of law enforcement and emergency services from Philadelphia and neighboring areas, such as Philadelphia Police Officer Nicholas Bechtle, New Jersey State Trooper Marcellus Bethea, and Upper Gwynedd Fire Chief Jeffrey Tomczak, among others.
Honoring Community Spirit
A key highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the 2024 Andy Chan Community Spirit Award to Garnet Hathaway of the Philadelphia Flyers. Known for his work through “Hath’s Heroes,” Hathaway has consistently supported first responders by providing meals during the pandemic, hosting families at Flyers games, and launching a charitable campaign linked to his on-ice performance. His contributions have left a lasting impact on the first responder community, and this recognition reflects his unwavering dedication.
Festive Activities and Cheer
The Andy Chan Holiday Block Party promises something for everyone—raffles, a DJ, and appearances by beloved mascots Gritty and the Phillie Phanatic. Santa Claus, local celebrities, and prominent law-enforcement figures will join the festivities, adding to the celebratory atmosphere. Participating venues, including The Plough & the Stars, Sassafras, Nick’s Bar & Grill, Cuba Libre, Bootlegger’s, and Rotten Ralph’s, will offer drink specials for attendees who make a suggested donation of $20.
“Last year, we raised over $64,000 in support of Andy’s family and others in need,” said Mark O’Connor, Executive Director of the Families Behind the Badge Children’s Foundation. “This year, our goal is to surpass $100,000. The holiday season is the perfect time to come together, celebrate, and show our first responders how much they are valued.”
Spreading Holiday Joy
The event is open to the public, inviting everyone to lend their support to this vital cause. All proceeds will directly benefit the recovery of Officer Chan and provide assistance to the families of eight fallen or critically injured first responders. Through this shared effort, the community can honor the courage and sacrifices of those who serve.
The 5th Annual Andy Chan Holiday Block Party is a meaningful way to celebrate the season of giving while creating treasured memories alongside friends and neighbors. Don’t miss this opportunity to spread holiday cheer and support those who’ve dedicated their lives to protecting others.
